Mac and Me (Full Soundtrack)

Here is the now out of print soundtrack to the 80s total and utter rip-off of E.T. We'll there is not to much to say about this flick other than it's really bad. Damn near unwatchable. When I saw it at Big Lots for $4 I just had to have it. There is one scene that is particularly hilarious and bad that involves the kid in the wheelchair. The soundtrack itself isn't all that bad, but low budget

Bjork's Volta Tour Live & A Few Other New Live Concert DVDs

Although this is primarily a film blog I like to review recent concert DVDs and musician bio-pics every so often. Here are some brief blurbs about some new favorites:

Björk's Voltaic: The Volta Tour Live in Paris

(Nonesuch, 2009)

I was told that this was a "a gorgeous cinematic interpretation of the tour" and it certainly is. With all the theatrical bombast we're come to expect from Björk, this beautifully shot concert film features a 10-piece female Icelandic brass section augmented by Chris Corsano of Sonic Youth on drums, Jonas Sen on keyboards and electronic composer Mark Bell from LFO providing computer sequencing. It's an energetic, at times fiery ensemble as on highlights such as "Army Of Me" and "The Pleasure Is All Mine". A showstopping "State Of Emergency" oddly doesn't appear in the track listing but that's my only quibble with this rousing and powerfully pleasing performance film.

Ashes Of American Flags: Wilco Live (Nonesuch, 2009)

As fans of the former Alt.country Chicogoan band Wilco well know, there have been many personnel line-up changes in the 15 years since their debut. The highly recommended documentary I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART (Dir. Sam Jones, 2002) is essential for some background dealing with one extremely pivotal era in the band's existence but this DVD isn't about their past; it's a representation of where the band stands now. Judging from this, they stand strong indeed.

Filmed at various venues over the last tour from Tulsa to Washington DC, Jeff Tweedy leads his crew through a set-list mainly made up of songs from their last few albums ("Monday" from the 1996 album "Being There" is the oldest selection). Fellow film makers Christoph Green and former Fugazi member Brendan Canty handle the camera and editing duties while Wilco brings the rock they've majestically fine tuned over the years. From their rapturous applause at the end of every song, the audience sounds very satisfied - viewers at home will surely be too.

The Hold Steady: A Positive Rage (Vagrant, 2009)

Not a concert film or a bio-doc (though there are elements of both), this is more a "bonus featurette" DVD that accompanies the Brooklyn band's first live CD. That said this 53 minute film is as alive and boisterous as their live shows as it actually acts a sort of mission statement. As front-man Craig Finn reflects right off the bat: "There's so many of these indie rock shows that you go to that are so joyless. I people to feel this joy and the celebratory nature of rock 'n roll when you go see the Hold Steady." From fan testimonials to scrappy live footage, "A Positive Rage" lives up to its title and gives newcomers an inside look at a band just starting to hit its stride. Because it only has a couple of full songs ("Chips Ahoy" and "Stuck Between Stations") coupled with the ramshackle approach of the interviews, it's not really one for repeated viewings, but as a companion to the live disc (which is pretty scrappy itself with its bootleg audience recording sound quality) it's worth one good concentrated viewing.

Okay! There's a few choice music DVDs for you. If you have any recent favorites - hit that comment box below and let me know.

TAKING WOODSTOCK: The Film Babble Blog Review

On Monday I announced a TAKING WOODSTOCK giveway (soundtracks, t-shirts, air-fresheners) - go here for information. I'll be taking answers until September 6th so get those entries in! Now onto the movie:

TAKING WOODSTOCK
(Dir. Ang Lee, 2009)

In his first starring role, with eyes that look like the sewn-on big brown button eyes from the movie CORALINE, comedian Demetri Martin finds himself smack dab in the middle of the wheeling and dealing behind one of the biggest rock festivals in history. For Martin as Elliot Tiber, a closeted artist who manages his parents' struggling motel, this all begins as a whim one day in the summer of 1969. Hearing that officials for the town of Wallkill banned the concert from its original location, he cold calls Woodstock Ventures armed with the only musical festival permit in the entire town of Bethel, New York. Almost immediately promoter Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff) and company arrive by helicopter to a nude welcoming via the avant garde theater troupe (led by Dan Fogler) that live in the barn behind the motel. Unfortunately, Martin's land, a swamp really, isn't suitable for concert grounds but there happens to be a farm with a lot of land just up the road owned by dairy farmer Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy in a nicely laid back performance) that just might do.

It's tempting to ditch the plot summary here and just say 'and the rest is history' but there's so many endearing details in this low key but extremely likable film to address. Using the same split screen techniques of the original concert documentary WOODSTOCK, Lee has the look and feel down completely. Some shots look so amazingly like footage from the actual event that I was amazed to find out that none was used. There are no actors playing the musicians because the action never gets that close to the stage - miles away Martin navigates through the huge crowd, taking part in the mud slides and indulging in psychedelics with the music blaring off in the the distance but he never gets up close and personal with the performers and perhaps that's the point.

There are some mis-strokes, such as a traumatized Vietnam vet played by Emile Hirsch and a smug Liev Scheiber as a gun totting transvestite providing security. These are unnecessary devices in an already overstuffed scenario. Some of Martin's exchanges with his parents (Immelda Stanton and Henry Goodman) are far from fleshed out as well but this doesn't kill the film's beautiful buzz. I could also overlook the historical errors. For example, Wavy Gravy is mentioned but at Woodstock he was still Hugh Romney, he wasn't dubbed Wavy Gravy till 2 weeks later at the Texas International Pop Festival. Also the real life Michael Lang disputes that Tiber introduced him to Yasgur to get the ball rolling but again I can let these things go and bet you can too.

Overall the humor ("Charging a dollar for water? Can you believe that?") and heart of this project are in the right place, with cynicism not being allowed entry. I've written before about whether or not Woodstock lives up to its legend, and I feel that Ang Lee's film here isn't interested in taking a stand. It's content with a simple story about a few days that changed a man's life (you could be forgiven in not knowing that Martin is dealing with his homosexuality - it sure isn't an element they're advertising in the trailers).

In my favorite sequence Martin gets a ride from a sympathetic motorcycle cop into what Scheiber calls "the center of the universe" (actually despite what I said above - Scheiber does have his moments). Martin then meets a hippy couple (Paul Dano and Kelli Garner) and takes LSD with them. Martin's already big pupils get bigger as he watches the colors from posters, crystals, and assorted paisley accoutrements swirl around the walls of their VW bus. It's a scene that could be so clichéd - the obligatory trippy scene - but Lee, here and in the rest of the film, sincerely just wants us to soak up the sights and sounds and be soothed by them. Dark clouds were on the horizon for the Woodstock generation but for one brief moment the light of possibility was blinding. Lee captures that dying light and gives us a film that gives off great vibes.

IN THE LOOP: The Film Babble Blog Review

IN THE LOOP (Dir. Armando Iannucci, 2009)

Picking up comparisons to DR. STRANGELOVE and geared aesthetically as an "anti-West Wing", Armando Iannucci's directorial debut posits people in power treading water in a sea of political spin. It all comes from a misspoken statement by the British Secretary of State for International Development played by Tom Hollander. Off the cuff, he says that a proposed war in the Middle East is "unforeseeable" on a radio talk show and that causes what one staffer calls "a catastrofuck".

Already strained relations between UK and US officials come to a boil. Hollander finds himself getting in deeper as obscenities fly at a ferocious rate from the Prime Minister's press secretary Peter Capaldi (reprising his role from Iannucci's TV series The Thick Of It), misdirections come from diplomat handlers (Chris Addison and Gina McKee), and then there are the astute observations of James Gandofini (The Sopranos) as a gruff general who when attempting to strategize finds himself musing: "At the end of a war you need some soldiers left, really, or else it looks like you've lost."

The large intertwined ensemble cast also includes Chris Addison (also from The Thick Of It), Steve Coogan, David Rasche, and an all grown up Anna Chlumsky (MY GIRL). With literally over a hundred great lines (most of them coming from the foul mouth of Capaldi) and a wickedly wry tone, IN THE LOOP has enough laughs for several movie comedies. It's a window into the tangled tortured world of policy makers and those who toil in the trenches beneath them. They're all caught in a massive web of manipulation woven from competing self-serving ambitions and it's all rooted in cold sad reality. Such pungent political satire doesn't come around often so this is definitely one to look out for.

Actress upset with her fake profiles

Actress upset with her fake profiles

Asin Thottumkal has a serious problem - she has impersonators on all major social networking websites. Setting the record straight, the actress says that other than her own blog, she is neither on Twitter nor Facebook.

"I was ready to overlook these fake IDs using my name as long as they weren't harmful. But now the problem is getting out of hand," Asin, who made it big in Hindi films with "Ghajini", told IANS.

The other night a colleague had a whole long conversation with 'Asin' and called up the next day to share her excitement about the intimate conversation they had.

"I nearly fell off my chair. I won't name this actress. But she said we shared our most intimate secrets on Facebook. I nearly fell of my chair and asked her whom did she share her secrets with because it was most certainly not me.

"Two days ago a journalist came to interview me and said she got all the information on me from what I had written on Twitter. For the record, I'm not on any of the social networking websites. Apart from my own website, I'm not on the internet for any other purpose. I started blogging even before Aamir Khan did in August 2005," said Asin.

"I was clubbed with Chetan Bhagat and Shashi Tharoor and put on a social networking website. But I'm not on Orkut, Facebook or Twitter. Apparently there are lots of fake profiles," she added.

Asin is also upset with false reports that she relishes meat despite the fact that she is a vegetarian.

"Its been ages since I have had non-vegetarian food. For all practical purposes, I'm a vegetarian. But I read this horrible report about how I love all kinds of exotic meats. I haven't been approached by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). But that doesn't mean I've to go the other way," she said.

Actor promises new things in film

Kaminey, Shahid KapurThough "Kaminey" has been given an 'A' certificate it is not a film that will make viewers uncomfortable, promises Shahid Kapur, who plays a double role in the Vishal Bharadwaj movie.

The young actor also says that the film provides intelligent fare to the audience.

"Normally filmmakers ask viewers to leave their brain at home when they come to see their movies, but here I am advising them to bring their minds along. It is not a run of the mill movie, it actually stands out," said Shahid.

"Kaminey" is releasing on Friday (August 14) with 1,100 prints despite an 'A' certificate.

"It is given 'A' certificate but it is a movie for all age groups... it's not a film that would make you uncomfortable while watching. 'Kaminey' will be my widest released movie so far. Till date my biggest hit 'Jab We Met' was released in 927 prints but 'Kaminey' is releasing with 1,100 prints," said Shahid.

The actor promises new things in the movie.

"'Kaminey' is certainly an important film for me as I have tried many new things in it. For the first time I am playing a double role and I am trying something different from a love story. In fact, this is also the first commercial film of Vishal Bharadwaj," said Shahid who was in Chandigarh to promote the film.

"I have seen the movie and also shown it to my family members. The movie has really come out well and we are getting good reactions," added the actor who has teamed up with Priyanka Chopra in it.

Throwing light on his role, the actor said: "I am playing the role of Charlie and Guddu - two brothers - in the movie. They are entirely different characters and do not even match with my real life, therefore it was a challenging task for me to play the role to perfection."

One of the characters he plays stammers and to prepare for the role Shahid met many ENT doctors, speech therapists and people with stammering problems.

"As the protagonist in the movie has some speech disorder, I met many experts as we did not want to make a caricature out of the characters. We have portrayed them very seriously and sensibly," he said.

About the title, he said: "When Vishal told me the title then I actually stood up in surprise. Even Priyanka and other star-cast were equally surprised. But when Vishal explained to us the plot, we realised that it is the most appropriate title as he wanted to communicate something that was really different."

Shahid, who has six-pack abs in the film, says he is more concerned about building physical strength.

"I'm purely vegetarian and crazy about my fitness. My main aim is to increase my physical strength and not the body size. I do an amalgamation of cardio-vascular exercises, free hand and weight training for four-five days in a week," he said.

He is also collaborating with a British university

A.R. Rahman, He is also collaborating with a British university Music maestro A.R. Rahman has offered to hold a peace concert in January next year in Australia where many Indian students have been target of alleged racial attacks.

The concert will be held at Parramatta Park in Sydney on January 16, 2010, said a press statement on Thursday (August 13).

The Oscar winning composer said the concert will be an attempt to "reunite culturally and spiritually" in view of the racial vibe.

The concert, Rahman hoped, will create a "bridge of understanding and love" and break down "cultural misunderstandings".

Premier Nathan Rees of New South Wales has congratulated Rahman for the offer, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Rahman has also joined hands with Britain's Middlesex University for a programme focussing on blending Asian and Western music.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Rahman's Chennai-based KM Music Conservatory and the university that may also look at opportunities to provide a collaborative three-year music programme, said a press statement released on Thursday.

Rahman, who has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by the university, thinks of the collaboration in music instruction "as a great bridge between Indian and Western music".

Middlesex University offers programmes in music composition, music management, music performance, and jazz and popular music.

Garbage in, garbage out, Priyanka says

Garbage in, garbage out, Priyanka says Since moviegoers in India today are exposed to world cinema in a big way, Priyanka Chopra is surprised that quite a few Bollywood filmmakers still follow the escapist route. But she says her new film "Kaminey" doesn't fall in that category and audiences should come with their thinking caps on.

"Isn't it surprising that whenever there is a Hollywood film playing, we go all ga ga over it, especially when it follows an unconventional narrative? We ask each other when they can do it, why can't we? We are so much in awe of their cinema," Priyanka told IANS.

"However, when it comes to our own movies, we try to play safe stating that we are doing this for our audiences. Come on guys, it's the same audience we are catering to, so why not give them something really new and different to relish?

"Frankly speaking, I don't like it at all when we keep making such statements as so and so film doesn't require audiences to wear a thinking cap," she said.

The actress asks a series of questions regarding the intelligence of the audiences.

"My question is - why should we underestimate the intelligence of Indian audiences? Why do we believe that they want everything on a platter? Why don't we make a cinema-going experience so exciting and engrossing for them that they actually go on to exclaim 'wow'?" the actress said.

Releasing on Friday, "Kaminey" is a dark thriller that revolves around gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, it features Shahid Kapur in a double role.

Priyanka observes that while good films are working, bad films, despite top star casts and huge budgets, are being rejected by the audience.

"It's as simple as that - garbage in, garbage out," she said. "Thankfully India is changing for the better and there are some brilliant films being made today."

Ask her to give a few examples and she responds in a jiffy, "Movies like 'Dev D', 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Rock On' and 'A Wednesday' have worked because they had an original script and were treated so differently and innovatively. These were all intelligent films and not made for kindergarten kids. No wonder audiences grabbed them all in a big way."

She doesn't forget to mention her own movies from 2008 that saw her marching back into the reckoning.

"Both 'Dostana' and 'Fashion' were made within commercial parameters but still had a very good story to tell. These were not frivolous at all. That's the reason they succeeded."

"In fact, the last film that really impressed me this year was 'New York'. Kudos to Yash Raj Films for backing such a subject and making such a good topical entertainer. It was a sensitive story to be told and Kabir Khan treated it with utmost maturity. Hats off.

"These are the kind of films that make you believe that Bollywood is indeed seeing a new direction for better", she said.

Genelia says she’s not the least like this dumb girl

Genelia D'Souza, Genelia says she’s not the least like this dumb girl In "Life Partner", Genelia D'Souza is cast as a dumb girl and the actress is cringing.

"This girl thinks she knows it all, when she's clueless. She doesn't know how dumb she is. She's got loads of money and time and she keeps trying different vocations. For starters, she attempts a career in singing and she's a disaster at it," Genelia told IANS.

Releasing on Friday (Aug 14), the film also stars Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Prachi Desai and Govinda.

Playing this scatter-brain was very tough for Genelia.

"I'm not the least like this rich, pampered and clueless chick. And I'd certainly not try my hand at anything I wouldn't succeed in. But this character keeps bumbling from one experience to another. She's a nightmare," she said.

To add to Genelia's woes her character is hated by one of her favourite actors.

"Govinda, whom I adore, detests me in the film. Every time we're together, he is snarling and scowling at me. I hated that," she said.

Salman Khan returns as singer

Salman Khan in 'Wanted'A decade after he was last heard as a singer, Salman Khan is back behind the mike for his upcoming release "Wanted". Composer duo Sajid-Wajid say the song titled "Most Wanted Track" is true to the mood and theme of the film.

"The song is indeed a special part of 'Wanted'. We wanted to make something 'dhamakedaar' for Salman bhai and the idea was to have a track that gives audiences a taste of what the film is all about. This is why you don't just hear Salman bhai mouthing a few dialogues from the film but also singing in the true sense," Wajid told IANS.

In the late 1990s, each of Bollywood's three big Khans tried flexing their vocal chords as singers.

Aamir Khan saw huge success coming his way through the song "Aati kya Khandala" in the 1998 movie "Ghulam", Shah Rukh Khan's "Apun bola" that he sang for his 2000 movie "Josh" is heard till date and Salman too came up with a 'tapori' hit in "Chandi ki daal par" in "Hello Brother" in 1999.

Salman's new song has quite a few dialogues. It in fact begins with now-famous dialogue, "Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di.....", and packs in a lot more such one-liners that are bound to keep the masses and lovers of action cinema happy.

"Most Wanted Track" is currently being played along with the teasers of the film. If those 60 seconds are any indication, then this Boney Kapoor production is pretty much a successful film in the offing.

Courtesy the zany sound, two major aspects of the film are highlighted - Salman and 'desi' action - setting the tone for lovers of hardcore masala action.

"Salman Khan has always been known for giving his all to a film where his heart is set. 'Wanted' pretty much appears to be the film where he is back in a full-on action avtar five years since the release of 'Garv - Pride And Honor'," said a trade insider.

Wajid said: "The film is a full-on commercial affair and we went all out to make the album a complete package affair. Other than this theme track, which is of course the highlight of the film, we have incorporated a few dance numbers. We in fact even got Kamaal Khan, who has done so well with Salman bhai earlier, to sing a song ('Ishq Vishq') in 'Wanted'."

In the past, Salman has been credited as a singer for a couple of songs like "Chal mere bhai" or "Main hoon Yuvraaj". However, he didn't sing in the conventional sense for either.

While in the former it was Sanjay Dutt who actually crooned the track, with Salman just chipping in as a drunk younger brother, in the latter he primarily spoke a dialogue or two for around a minute as he introduced his character.

"'Most Wanted Track' is a full-fledged song though. Other than the dialogues, Salman bhai is heard singing 'Teri yaad satati hai' as a part of it. He has got the feeling of pain spot on. The genre of the song dictated that he sing in a laidback tone and he has done that perfectly fine," said Wajid.
Produced by Boney Kapoor, "Wanted" is directed by Prabhu Deva and features Ayesha Takia Azmi opposite Salman Khan. The film also stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant, Mahek Chhal and Prakash Raj along with Anil Kapoor in a special appearance.

Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala
Writer: Vishal Bhardwaj
Story

Kaminey is about Charlie and Guddu, twin brothers played by Shahid Kapoor, both of whom suffer from speech impediments and who can’t stand the sight of each other. Charlie, who pronounces S as F, is a small time gangster. Guddu, who stammers, is a mousy NGO worker. Guddu’s life plans, chalked out until 2014 on a chart stuck in his cupboard, are wrecked when he impregnates Sweety, his fiery girlfriend who until now has neglected to tell him that she is the sister of a powerful gangster-politician, Bhope, played by Amol Gupte. Meanwhile Charlie has come to possess a guitar containing cocaine worth 10 crore. The quintessential gambler thinks he’s finally hit the big score. What follows is a frantic, convoluted journey through Mumbai’s mean streets which are of course populated by many Kamineys: corrupt cops, nasty drug dealers, gun wielding henchmen. Eventually, the brothers’ determinedly separate narratives collide and they are forced to come together.

Be warned: there are stretches of Kaminey that will thoroughly confuse you, starting with the first fifteen minutes. The film has eleven-odd characters that you need to keep track of. Snatches of dialogue are in Bengali and Marathi. If you look away from the screen to send a text message, you might miss another twist in this very, very tangled tale. The first half moves slowly. You might be bewildered and perhaps even bored. But stay with the film. Because the pacing picks up in the second half and Vishal ties up the threads in an exhilarating climax, which, incredibly enough, manages to combine stunning violence with humor.

Kaminey is a good movie to watch. A good movie with good direction and some stunning scenes.

In "Kaminey", Shahid Kapur has dared to pick a subject which would have looked impossible to execute when read on paper. With his outstanding performance in the film, Shahid joins the list of top actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

And yes, Shahid and Priyanka have a crackling on-screen chemistry. After "Kaminey", audiences would be expecting a lot from him each time.

Director Vishal Bharadwaj has redefined filmmaking with "Kaminey". While making the film there was absolutely no reference point for Bharadwaj at least in Bollywood cinema. He picked from Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino brands of cinema and adapted it perfectly to a Bollywood milieu.

Bharadwaj takes his audience into a world that has perhaps never been explored before on Indian screen. He keeps introducing characters for the first 30 minutes while making sure that the twin brothers (Shahid) aren't brought together in a single frame till way past the interval.

He also confuses his audience on purpose in at least a couple of sequences and tests their intelligence. There's the scene where two groups of three characters each are shown interacting amongst themselves and eventually it turns out that all of them were in the same room. Or the entire hotel sequence where a drug deal goes kaput. And then, of course, the eventual coming together of all the 10 odd characters who are connected to one another.

Set in Mumbai, the film is mostly shot on real locations. The director's insistence on canning shots outdoors pays off as the backdrop becomes difficult to disentangle from the elements of this thriller.

So what one gets to see is a day in the life of two brothers who are on the run for different reasons. Guido (Shahid) has seen a sudden marriage with Sweaty, played by Priyanka Chopra who is excellent in her relatively short but meaningful and important role. He is now being followed by Sweety’s brother (Amol Gupte).

Charlie (Shahid) has got hold of drugs worth Rs.10 crore and is now all set to sell them off to fulfil his long cherished dreams.

And in between, there are cops, gangsters, international drug mafia, narcotics department, a 'Jai Maharashtra' slogan-raising brother, an over-'coked' friend and his two mad Bengali brothers - all of whom make sure that "Kaminey" turns out to be one joyride that keeps the excitement on till the credits start rolling.

The film starts off decently though one has to concentrate hard to get the point of the narrative. All of that starts making sense after 30 odd minutes, but you still feel that there could have been a little more meat to the proceedings.

However, the post interval portions make 'Kaminey' simply irresistible. Layer after layer unfolds, dark as well as humane side of people are put on display and finally comes an explosive climax that pretty much justifies the route that Bharadwaj takes in "Kaminey".

After watching the film, the first question that comes to the mind is - 'Why was the film granted an 'A' certificate?'

"Kaminey" is one of the few must watch films of 2009. From narrative to execution - Bharadwaj shows that he knows the art of creating a new world of cinema and lays out a road ahead for many aspiring filmmakers.
